A patient at her dentist's officeSeriously damaged teeth need more than just fillings. Even inlays and onlays may not be enough. In such cases, our Woodinville, WA dentists will use dental crowns to treat damaged teeth. Crowns are an excellent way to restore a smile.

Dr. Cristin Dowd and Dr. Ken D. Wu can use crowns in various ways, which includes making fixes to damaged front teeth. The team at Signature Smiles would like to consider the use of crowns on such prominent teeth in more detail below.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are tooth-like caps that are used to cover a tooth that has been seriously damaged or decayed. With a dental crown in place, patients will experience restored function of the capped tooth, and the underlying tooth structure will be protected from further harm.

Reasons Dental Crowns Are Placed on the Front Teeth

Dental crowns can be placed on any tooth that has been serious damaged. Some of the most common reasons dental crowns are placed on the front teeth include:

  • Serious tooth decay
  • Cracked teeth from falls
  • Dental injuries from sports
  • Tooth fractures due to vehicle accidents
  • Chipped teeth from biting hard objects

During a consultation, we can determine if a dental crown would be best for your damaged front teeth, or if a different treatment option would be more ideal.

Tooth-Colored Crowns vs. Metal Dental Crowns

Our Woodinville dental care center offers porcelain/tooth-colored crowns as well as metal crowns.

The tooth-colored crowns obviously have many cosmetic benefits. The ceramic material blends in with your natural teeth and is durable as well. Metal crowns are extremely strong, though they will call attention to themselves when you smile, speak, or laugh.

In general, our team feels that tooth-colored crowns are best for the front teeth, while metal crowns are better suited for the premolars and molars. Patients may have differing dental health goals, however, which we’re happy to discuss in person.

What to Expect During Dental Crown Treatment

When placing a crown on one of the front teeth, the treatment process is pretty straightforward.

The affected tooth will need to be prepped first, which means removing all of the compromised tooth structure. An impression is then taken of the prepped tooth so a custom crown can be crafted at an off-site dental lab.

When that custom crown is completed, it is checked for fit one last time. Adjustments to the finished crown are made if necessary. The crown is then securely adhered in place.

The Results of Front Tooth Dental Crowns

Thanks to dental crowns on the front teeth, patients are able to smile, speak, and eat their favorites foods with renewed confidence. If a patient receives porcelain crowns, these will blend in seamlessly with the surrounding teeth so no one will notice that dental work was completed. This focus on functional and effectively invisible dental care results is one of our primary goals.
